A tragic incident unfolded on Aloha Airlines Flight 243, traveling from Hilo to Honolulu, when a flight attendant lost her life in a rare plane accident. The Boeing 737-297 aircraft suffered significant damage mid-flight, causing fear and distress among passengers.

The distressing event took place on April 28, 1988, when the flight experienced explosive decompression due to a fuselage part breaking possibly due to inadequate maintenance and metal fatigue. Despite successfully landing in Maui, the aircraft suffered irreparable damage, with one casualty and numerous injuries.

During the incident, flight attendant Clarabelle Lansing, with 37 years of experience, was tragically ejected from the plane when the roof blew open mid-flight. Her body was never recovered, as reported by the Express. While eight others were seriously injured, Lansing was the sole fatality. Another cabin crew member and 57 passengers also sustained injuries from the sudden decompression.

The aircraft, 19 years old at the time, faced corrosion issues from exposure to coastal elements, leading to metal fatigue that caused the accident. Investigations revealed that crevice corrosion worsened the situation, resulting in the catastrophic mid-air incident.

The shocking revelation came when a passenger, Gayle Yamamoto, confessed to seeing a crack in the fuselage before boarding but chose not to report it. The incident has been memorialized in various media, notably in the film Miracle Landing.

In remembrance of the fallen flight attendant, Honolulu International Airport dedicated a garden in her honor within terminal one in 1995. This serene space provides a tranquil setting for reflection amidst the airport’s outdoor areas.
