“Armed Forces and Veterans to Get Priority Housing Access”

Published on

Armed forces personnel and veterans are set to receive priority access to housing developments on Ministry of Defence land, as per a recent Government announcement. It is projected that approximately 100,000 properties will be constructed on repurposed defence sites. Defence Secretary John Healey is scheduled to introduce a ‘Forces First’ initiative during a speech at the Labour Party Conference on Monday.

While visiting a shipyard in Merseyside, Healey expressed concerns about the inadequate housing conditions for military personnel and their families, attributing it to a retention crisis. He emphasized the need to improve housing standards for the armed forces, stating that substandard living conditions have adversely impacted morale.

The Labour party aims to expand homeownership opportunities for personnel and veterans by providing access to high-quality affordable housing. The Government has committed £1.5 billion towards upgrading military accommodation by 2029.

During his address at the conference, Healey is expected to criticize the Conservatives for neglecting Armed Forces housing, leading to recruitment and retention challenges. He highlighted Labour’s efforts to revamp military housing and emphasized the acceleration of housing construction on Defence land to benefit both service members and civilians nationwide.

Recent statistics reveal a significant decline in military personnel under the Tories, with more individuals leaving than joining the regular forces. Healey made these remarks during a visit to the Cammell Laird shipyard in Birkenhead following a major warship export agreement with Norway, which is expected to support hundreds of jobs in Merseyside.

The Ministry of Defence has invested nearly £5 billion in businesses in the north-west, sustaining over 20,000 jobs. The recent warship deal with Norway will inject £10 billion into the British economy, securing existing jobs at Cammell Laird and creating additional employment opportunities in the future.
