A resident of Edinburgh shared the heartbreaking story of losing her spouse to undiagnosed coronary heart disease just half a year after their marriage. Catherine Murray, ahead of World Heart Day, recounted the sudden passing of her husband, Iain, at 32 years old and her commitment to raising awareness about heart conditions.

Catherine, 34, completed a 21-mile walk in Edinburgh to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation (BHF). She and Iain had been together for 14 years, marrying only six months before his untimely death in May 2023. Their honeymoon trip to Portugal was scheduled for the following week, but tragedy struck before they could embark on it. Catherine found her husband lifeless on their sofa upon returning from work as a medical receptionist.

In the aftermath, Catherine moved in with Iain’s parents, Sharon and Fraser, for mutual support during their grieving process. She emphasized the importance of openly acknowledging and expressing their grief as a family.

Motivated by her loss, Catherine participated in the Kiltwalk to raise awareness for heart health and support BHF’s research efforts. She highlighted her personal journey towards better self-care, recognizing the impact of unhealthy habits on her well-being.

Statistics from the BHF indicate that someone in the UK succumbs to cardiovascular disease every three minutes. David McColgan, head of BHF Scotland, expressed concern over the high incidence of cardiovascular conditions leading to fatalities in Scotland, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to advancing heart health research for longer, healthier lives.
