Shaun Murphy expressed strong dissatisfaction towards Matchroom for the scheduling of the Champion of Champions event on Monday. This frustration stemmed from his recent participation in China’s International Championship quarter-finals just four days prior.
Murphy found himself in the tournament’s opening match and suffered a significant 4-1 defeat to Lei Peifan. The 43-year-old was taken aback when he only discovered his Monday fixture while returning from Nanjing, learning about the tournament schedule on the morning of the event.
In a statement to ITV4, Murphy criticized Matchroom for their handling of the group arrangements, stating, “I conduct myself as professionally as I possibly can. I try and treat the game with an incredible amount of respect.” He went on to express his disappointment with the last-minute notification of his match, especially considering the long journey back from China.
The snub of being the first player to compete on the opening day left Murphy feeling disrespected and unappreciated. He emphasized the lack of communication and unprofessionalism in the event’s formatting, contrasting his negative experience with Matchroom from his early days working with them.
In response to Murphy’s outcry, Matchroom released a statement acknowledging his frustrations and emphasizing their commitment to player priorities. They clarified that the groupings were based on seeding for transparency and fairness, acknowledging the challenges in scheduling but expressing a continuous effort to enhance future events.
While Murphy’s clash with Matchroom unfolded, other players like Mark Williams, Mark Allen, and Alfie Burden, who did not partake in the recent International Championship, were slated to play in the Champion of Champions later in the week, unlike Murphy who played on the inaugural day.
On a broader note, World No. 1 Judd Trump secured a 4-1 victory over Bai Yulu on the opening day of the Champion of Champions, advancing to face Lei later in the evening. The tournament continues with exciting matchups like Kyren Wilson vs Jack Lisowski, Allen vs Ziao Xintong, Williams vs Burden, Mark Selby vs Stephen Maguire, Neil Robertson vs Tom Ford, and John Higgins vs Xiao Guodong on Tuesday’s schedule.
