Scottish darts prodigy Mitchell Lawrie has set a new record as the youngest player to secure three senior men’s titles, surpassing Luke Littler’s previous achievement. The 15-year-old sensation claimed victory at the WDF Irish Classic in Killarney, achieving this feat just days after celebrating his 15th birthday.
In an impressive display, Lawrie emerged victorious in the final against Ronan McDonagh, showcasing exceptional skill with four maximum 180s and a remarkable average of 98.60 in a decisive 5-1 win. Prior to this, he clinched the Irish Classic Youths title by defeating Kaya Basal 4-1, displaying a solid average of 90.95.
Supporting Lawrie in his triumph were his father, Fraser, and grandfather, Dougie, who cheered him on from the stands at the INEC Arena in Kerry, Ireland. Lawrie’s exceptional performance at a young age has drawn comparisons to Littler, who previously held the record at 15 years, five months, and four days, with Lawrie surpassing this milestone by five months.
Lawrie is now set to compete in the upcoming men’s and youth WDF world championships at Lakeside later this month. Meanwhile, the reigning PDC World Champion is gearing up to defend his title at Alexandra Palace, with Lawrie eyeing a potential showdown against his predecessor in the future.
Although Lawrie will have to wait until he turns 16 to face Littler in PDC competitions, his family is fully supportive of his journey in the sport. In an interview with The Sun, Dougie Lawrie emphasized that they want Mitchell to carve his path in darts on his own terms, rather than being compared to Littler.
Dougie proudly mentioned that he taught Mitchell how to play darts, instilling in him a sense of aggression and determination from a young age, which has contributed to his success on the oche. Lawrie’s family remains focused on his happiness and enjoyment of the game as he continues to make strides in the darts world.
