“FCA Accelerates Car Finance Compensation Timeline”

Published on

The latest update from the financial regulator addresses the situation of numerous drivers eagerly awaiting more information about a significant car finance compensation program. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is presently seeking input on the specifics of a compensation initiative for individuals who were unfairly subjected to car finance agreements between 2007 and 2024 due to inadequate disclosure of broker commissions.

Compensation may be owed to drivers who had car finance agreements containing discretionary commission arrangements (DCAs), allowing brokers and dealers to inflate interest rates on car loans for higher commissions. Additionally, car finance agreements with high commission structures or where broker exclusivity with a single lender was not disclosed may be eligible for the scheme.

In a recent announcement, the FCA has accelerated the timeline for motor finance companies to address complaints by two months, moving the deadline up from July 31, 2026, to May 31, 2026. Complaint handling, paused since January 2024, will resume, requiring firms to provide final responses to motor leasing complaints starting December 5, 2025.

Over 14 million car finance agreements could be covered by the compensation program, expected to launch early next year. The FCA estimates that most drivers might receive roughly £700 in compensation. The regulator emphasized the importance of promptly addressing complaints, highlighting that some consumers have been awaiting responses for nearly two years.

The FCA discourages the use of legal or claims management services for complaints, advising individuals to contact the lender directly for a cost-free resolution process. Those who have lodged complaints before the scheme’s implementation are likely to receive compensation faster, with an estimated total payout of £8.2 billion by lenders.

Renowned financial expert Martin Lewis has encouraged potentially eligible individuals to file their complaints early. Preemptively submitting a complaint could be beneficial, especially for older cases where detailed information may no longer be available from the car finance firm. Lewis stressed the importance of flagging cases for review, even if compensation eligibility is uncertain.
