James Brose, the current mayor of North Algona Wilberforce in eastern Ontario, has been closely monitoring the webpage for the upcoming fall election in his township and expresses concerns. Serving as the mayor for the past eight years, Brose, a retired 69-year-old farmer, has decided not to seek re-election due in part to a health scare he experienced last year. Despite the approaching deadline for nomination papers, as of Friday, no candidate has stepped forward to succeed Brose as the mayor of North Algona Wilberforce.
Brose acknowledges the challenges that come with the role of mayor, including a significant workload and managing social media interactions. His decision to step back was also influenced by his health scare, which involved a heart attack and quadruple bypass surgery last year. While feeling healthy now, Brose expressed uncertainty about committing another four years to the mayoral position.
The lack of interest in running for mayor in North Algona Wilberforce mirrors a trend seen in other Ontario municipalities, such as Carleton Place, Petawawa, and Beckwith, where only one incumbent has filed nomination papers for mayoral or reeve positions. This pattern could potentially lead to more acclaimed positions in the upcoming election, as seen in previous Ontario municipal elections.
In Ottawa, five incumbent councillors currently face no opponents, while in the Town of Arnprior, only five candidates have filed their papers so far. Despite the slow start, incumbent Coun. Dan Lynch remains optimistic, citing previous last-minute filings in past elections. Lynch emphasized the importance of competitive elections for a healthy democracy.
Both Brose and Lynch highlighted the challenges faced by municipal politicians, including the modest remuneration relative to the job’s demands. They noted that the financial aspect could deter younger, working-age individuals from participating in local politics. Lynch emphasized the dedication required for the role, stating that one must truly “love the community, love the work, and be retired” to justify the efforts put in for the modest compensation.
