“Fresh Take on ‘Sense and Sensibility’ Delves into Sisterly Bond”

In the realm of prestigious dramas, the perennial question arises: Is there a genuine need for yet another period drama or another rendition of a Jane Austen classic like “Sense and Sensibility”?

For those well-acquainted with director Ang Lee’s 1995 adaptation of “Sense and Sensibility,” the query may seem pointed. With numerous screen adaptations of Austen’s works and at least five previous versions of “Sense and Sensibility,” the abundance of retellings can raise doubts.

Enter director Georgia Oakley’s fresh take on “Sense and Sensibility,” set to premiere in theaters on Oct. 16. Featuring Daisy Edgar-Jones as Elinor Dashwood and Esmé Creed-Miles as her sister Marianne, and penned by Diana Reid, this rendition opts not to outdo the romance of the 1995 film.

Instead, it delves into the profound sisterly bond between Elinor and Marianne, shedding light on the financial insecurity that constrains their choices.

Post their father’s demise, the Dashwood sisters face a precarious financial situation as the family estate passes to their half-brother, compelling them to relocate to a more modest abode. In Austen’s era, women’s futures hinged on male relatives’ benevolence or marital security, rendering the sudden loss of status and stability particularly daunting.

The film’s visual narrative mirrors their journey, transitioning from the refined elegance of drawing rooms to the rugged countryside, amidst inclement weather, mud, and untamed fields. Engaging in gardening, long walks, beach runs, and pond wading, Elinor discovers solace in sketching and skipping rocks, while Marianne often lounges in fields, gazing at the clouds.

This raw setting not only accentuates their financial vulnerability but also underscores their shared experiences. Elinor’s composed demeanor conceals her deep emotions, contrasting with Marianne’s vulnerability to heartbreak. Throughout the film, circumstances compel each sister to empathize with the other’s perspective.

“The sisters are the constant,” remarked Edgar-Jones, emphasizing Oakley and Reid’s focus on the central love story between the siblings. The seamless collaboration with her longtime friend Creed-Miles facilitated an authentic portrayal of their characters.

The strong sibling camaraderie between the sisters serves as a cornerstone, providing them with mutual support and critique. Natalie Jenner, a Canadian author, who drew inspiration from Austen’s legacy in her novel “The Jane Austen Society,” highlighted the enduring relevance of the sisters’ unwavering bond.

The new film introduces a fresh interpretation of male characters, deviating from the established archetypes in Lee’s 1995 version. Herbert Nordrum, portraying Colonel Brandon, opted for an awkward and enigmatic portrayal, focusing on the character’s internal struggles in expressing emotions. In contrast, Frank Dillane, who embodied John Willoughby, aimed to showcase Willoughby’s endearing qualities while not shying away from his questionable actions.

While Lee’s adaptation exudes opulence and grandeur, Oakley’s rendition exudes a subtler, grounded essence, aiming to resonate with contemporary audiences. Jenner emphasized Austen’s characters’ quest for happiness without compromising their essence, resonating with modern viewers’ pursuit of authenticity.

In a post-pandemic world yearning for simplicity and nature’s embrace, Austen’s narratives offer a timeless amalgamation of romance, friendship, family, and self-discovery. The enduring allure of “Sense and Sensibility” lies not in surpassing previous versions but in its capacity to invite fresh interpretations, reflecting the enduring, relatable essence of Austen’s storytelling.
