A religious non-profit organization established by an American Christian musician, whose concert was canceled in Moncton last year, has taken legal action against the city. The City of Moncton rescinded permits in July for a performance by Sean Feucht that was planned to be held in a public park on the riverfront. Burn 24/7 Canada, the non-profit founded by Feucht, filed a notice of action in Moncton court, asserting that the city’s termination of the “musical worship show” violated the organization’s freedom of expression rights.

According to the statement of claim, the cancellation of the event infringed on rights outlined in section 2(b) of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Burn 24/7 Canada contends that the cancellation was not justified and caused harm, impacting fundamental civil liberties crucial to Canadian democracy. The organization alleges that the city’s actions were based on the perception of Feucht’s conservative Christian beliefs and support for the former U.S. president.

Feucht, known as a Christian missionary and singer, has faced controversy for his views on various social and political issues. His organization hosts events in both Canada and the United States, with a focus on spreading Christian worship and the Gospel message. The canceled concert in Moncton was relocated to another venue, resulting in additional expenses for Burn 24/7 Canada, including insurance, printing costs, and transportation.

The organization claims damages of $50,000 due to the show’s relocation and decreased attendance. Despite complying with the city’s requirements and providing necessary information, the event was ultimately canceled by Moncton authorities. Burn 24/7 Canada asserts that safety concerns cited by the city were not valid reasons for the cancellation, emphasizing the importance of allowing controversial speakers to express their views without hindrance. The legal dispute is ongoing as the city refrains from commenting on the matter while it is under judicial review.
