Two individuals have been sentenced to life in prison for intentionally running over two young men who were returning home from a pub. Alex Rose, 30, and Charles Pardoe, 25, were convicted of murder for driving a black pickup truck the wrong way down a motorway slip road and crashing into an e-bike carrying the victims, William Birchard and Darren George.
Following the incident on the M3/A316 slip road in Sunbury-on-Thames, Surrey, Rose received a minimum sentence of 32 years and 308 days, while Pardoe was given a minimum of 28 years and 178 days in prison. The prosecution revealed that the victims encountered Rose and his associates by chance while they were on their way home from a pub in Ashford, Surrey.
The tragic collision was described as a deliberate act of violence by the prosecution, who claimed that Pardoe and another accomplice, Samuel Aspden, assisted Rose in pursuing and harming the victims. The court heard that the victims, Mr. Birchard and Mr. George, were hit by the pickup truck after attempting to flee from the pursuing vehicles driven by Rose and his associates.
Mr. Birchard succumbed to fatal injuries at the scene, while Mr. George suffered severe head injuries and passed away the following day. The accused individuals were arrested shortly after the incident, with Rose’s girlfriend, Tara Knaggs, also facing charges for allegedly aiding Rose in escaping from the authorities.
The jury at Guildford Crown Court convicted Rose, Pardoe, and Knaggs for their roles in the tragic event, while Aspden was found not guilty of the murder charges. The Crown Prosecution Service emphasized that the victims were innocent bystanders who fell victim to Rose’s unfounded suspicions and violent actions, leading to a devastating outcome.
