French military forces have conducted a raid on a deserted vessel suspected to be linked to Russia and involved in the launch of drones into NATO airspace. The oil tanker, flying the flag of Benin, is believed to be part of Vladimir Putin’s clandestine fleet, which includes aging tankers blacklisted by the European Union.
The tanker, currently anchored off the western coast of France, was boarded by French troops following reports of its suspicious activities. French President Emmanuel Macron has stated that the vessel is under investigation for serious violations but refrained from confirming any direct ties to drone operations conducted while the ship was in Denmark.
During an EU summit in Copenhagen, Macron emphasized the gravity of the offenses committed by the tanker’s crew, although he remained cautious in linking them to the reported drone incidents. Speculations suggest that the tankers may have been utilized for launching drones or as diversions, with data indicating another ship, the Astrol 1, passing through the Øresund Strait during the drone sightings.
The recent drone activity by Russia, breaching Polish airspace, has raised concerns among NATO members. This provocation by Putin is seen as a test of NATO’s solidarity in defending member states against potential Russian aggression, especially considering historical annexations by Russia.
The events highlight the growing tensions between Russia and NATO, emphasizing the need for vigilance and unity among member nations in the face of potential threats.
