Tropical Storm Lala targeted Hawaii’s Big Island over the weekend, potentially marking the first direct hurricane strike on the island in over a century and a half. The storm intensified with sustained winds reaching 120 km/h, classifying it as a Category 1 hurricane. The forecast indicated that the eyewall would pass over or near the island’s southern region, bringing strong winds to the volcanic slopes.
Experts predicted significant rainfall of up to 63.5 centimeters, posing a risk of life-threatening mudslides in the mountainous terrain where residents live in makeshift homes off the grid. Authorities advised residents to seek immediate shelter to ensure their safety.
Local residents, like Bobby Camara, expressed readiness for the storm, with preparations such as stocking up on essentials and securing necessary supplies. Hawaii Governor Josh Green emphasized the severity of the storm, warning of potential flooding and wildfires caused by the powerful winds sweeping through the island chain.
Mike Caputo, a resident of Keaau, highlighted concerns about flash flooding and fallen trees, particularly the large but fragile albizia trees that could block roads. To mitigate risks, he took precautions by trimming trees ahead of the storm.
The Big Island was under a hurricane warning, while tropical storm warnings were issued for several other islands in the region. The latest projections suggested that Lala would make landfall near the southern tip of the Big Island, prompting precautionary measures such as opening shelters and advising ranchers to keep cattle in safe areas.
Officials urged residents to take the storm seriously, especially in remote and rural areas vulnerable to the storm’s impact. With memories of recent floods still fresh in their minds, many residents were concerned about the potential for further damage.
As wind speeds increased, the risk of wildfires heightened due to dry and breezy conditions. The community remained vigilant following a previous fire incident during extreme winds, underscoring the importance of weather awareness and preparedness.
Reflecting on past hurricanes, experts emphasized the unpredictability of storms and the importance of staying informed and cautious during such weather events.
