The storm intensified with sustained winds reaching 120 km/h, classifying it as a Category 1 hurricane. The forecast indicated that the eyewall would pass over or near the island’s southern region, bringing strong winds to the volcanic slopes.

Experts predicted significant rainfall of up to 63.5 centimeters, posing a risk of life-threatening mudslides in the mountainous terrain where residents live in makeshift homes off the grid. Authorities advised residents to seek immediate shelter to ensure their safety.

Local residents, like Bobby Camara, expressed readiness for the storm, with preparations such as stocking up on essentials and securing necessary supplies. The latest projections suggested that Lala would make landfall near the southern tip of the Big Island, prompting precautionary measures such as opening shelters and advising ranchers to keep cattle in safe areas.
