“Indonesia Quake: 7.7 Magnitude, 47 Dead”

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 and numerous aftershocks hit eastern Indonesia, resulting in the death of at least 47 individuals, as reported by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB). Around 2,000 people sought safety as a result of the disaster. Nagekeo, the closest region to the epicenter, remains inaccessible to rescue teams due to landslides obstructing roads and communication disruptions.

Although a tsunami warning was issued following the quake, it was lifted three hours later. Residents, such as Nona from Talibura village in East Nusa Tenggara, described the intense impact of the earthquake, prompting them to flee for safety. Rescuers in Maumere discovered 20 fatalities, six injuries, and two individuals trapped under debris, according to Fathur Rahman, head of the city’s rescue agency.

BNPB’s chief, Suharyanto, highlighted the challenges of reaching residents trapped in buildings and landslides blocking roads in the affected areas. Efforts to access Nagekeo were hindered by landslides, with teams exploring alternative routes by ferry. Damage assessments revealed significant destruction to homes, warehouses, and government structures, with reports of traffic congestion and power outages in various areas.

Governor Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena confirmed five deaths from collapsing structures during sleep. Preliminary data from BNPB indicated extensive damage to residential and public buildings, including schools, health facilities, and places of worship. Video footage captured moments of panic as parts of buildings crumbled, with people fleeing the scene in Maumere.

Residents across multiple regions, including East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, and parts of South Sulawesi, experienced strong tremors lasting approximately one minute. The seismic activity in Indonesia is attributed to its location on the “Pacific Ring of Fire,” a region prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
