A recent study has revealed that flight attendants and pilots face a higher risk of radiation-related cancers compared to individuals working with radioactive materials. Cosmic radiation, originating from space, poses a significant risk to individuals at high altitudes, such as those in the aviation industry.
Published in JAMA Internal Medicine, the study analyzed data from over 12 million death certificates, focusing on occupations and cancer death rates associated with radiation exposure. Flight attendants and pilots were found to have the highest percentage of deaths from radiation-related cancers among more than 500 occupations. The study also indicated that these occupational groups did not exhibit higher-than-normal death rates from cancers not linked to radiation exposure.
The study challenges the belief that flight crews’ increased risk of skin cancer is solely due to sun exposure during layovers. Rather, the researchers suggest that cockpit environments may play a more significant role in elevating the risk of certain cancers among pilots. Flight attendants were found to have a 50% higher likelihood of dying from radiation-related cancers compared to the general working population, while pilots had a 36% higher likelihood.
Limitations in the study included uncertainties regarding the specific sources of radiation exposure for each individual and potential misclassifications of occupations on death certificates. The study also highlighted the challenge of determining the impact of various overlapping exposures, such as cosmic radiation, UV-A light, and circadian disruption.
The findings emphasize the need for heightened awareness of radiation risks among flight crews, with recommendations for regular skin examinations and early mammograms for women in these professions. The study authors also suggest that healthcare providers should maintain a vigilant approach to cancer screening for pilots and flight attendants given their occupational risks.
