“Beware ‘Dr Google’: Rise of Cyberchondria in UK”

Published on

A warning from experts highlights the potential dangers of an internet-driven issue affecting the British population.

The ease of accessing online self-diagnosis has given rise to a phenomenon known as ‘cyberchondria’, a condition stemming from excessive reliance on ‘Dr Google’. Similar to hypochondria, where individuals constantly worry about their health even without a serious medical problem, cyberchondria results from an unhealthy fixation on health that can lead to heightened anxiety.

In 2023, adults in the UK conducted nearly 50 million health-related searches on Google. Research indicates that two out of five people end up diagnosing themselves with a severe ailment after looking up their symptoms online.

While being vigilant about health can help in early disease detection, experts caution against the negative repercussions. Health anxiety is believed to cost the NHS over £420 million annually, and if left unaddressed, it can severely impact individuals.

Mark Burdon, a pharmacist and advisor to the Proprietary Association of Great Britain (PAGB), expressed concerns about cyberchondria, describing it as an illness anxiety disorder characterized by excessive online health searches that can lead individuals to believe minor symptoms indicate serious conditions.

Professor David Veale, a consultant psychiatrist at London hospitals and co-author of Overcoming Health Anxiety, noted the ease of obtaining health information online but warned that the abundance of information can breed uncertainty and fuel anxiety.

While cyberchondria is not an officially recognized medical term, researchers are beginning to acknowledge its significance. A 2018 study from Florida State University highlighted the negative impact of cyberchondria on functional abilities and healthcare utilization, suggesting it could pose a substantial public health challenge.

Individuals with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) are particularly vulnerable to cyberchondria. Recent reviews have raised concerns about categorizing excessive symptom-searching as a potential behavioral addiction akin to gambling or shopping.

A 2020 study published in Comprehensive Psychiatry analyzed numerous reports on cyberchondria worldwide, with researchers warning that the trend could escalate into a major public health concern due to the widespread use of the internet.

Recent reports have linked cyberchondria to an increase in young people seeking medical attention for minor issues that could have been managed at home. The PAGB found that younger generations, especially Gen Zs and millennials, are more likely to seek professional medical help for minor ailments compared to older age groups.

The PAGB attributed the rise of cyberchondria among young adults to a reliance on social media for health information. Additionally, they noted a decline in Britons’ confidence in self-managing minor health problems, with fewer people feeling capable of treating common colds without professional intervention.

Efforts are needed to enhance public awareness of self-care practices and available healthcare pathways. The PAGB suggested implementing national campaigns at regular intervals to educate people on self-care strategies and appropriate healthcare utilization.
