Eland Cables, a supplier of electrical cables for major infrastructure projects, has taken the initiative to implement a pay raise for its employees earlier than scheduled. The increase in wages is in line with the Real Living Wage, a voluntary wage standard established by the Living Wage Foundation for workers aged 18 and above.
The Real Living Wage is calculated based on the cost of essential items such as food, clothing, and household bills. The new hourly rates will see a rise of 85p to £13.45 per hour, a 6.7% increase, and an increase of 95p to £14.80 per hour in London, a 6.9% increase, surpassing the statutory minimum wage.
This wage adjustment benefits all employees over 18 working for a Real Living Wage-accredited employer, which now includes over 16,000 organizations. While most employers have until May 2026 to implement the new rates, Eland Cables has proactively introduced the higher wages months ahead of schedule.
Employees like Ben, a 34-year-old father of two from Doncaster, are appreciative of the early wage boost. Ben expressed his gratitude, highlighting the positive impact the extra income will have on his family’s general expenses, especially as the holiday season approaches.
JS Pelland, executive director of Eland Cables, emphasized that the decision to implement the Real Living Wage early aligns with the company’s values of fairness, loyalty, and long-term success. Pelland stressed the importance of fair compensation for employees, noting that it contributes to employee retention, engagement, and overall performance.
Eland Cables has seen significant improvements in staff retention, reduced sickness absence, and increased productivity since adopting the Living Wage Plus policy. The company’s commitment to internal promotion and career development has led to success stories like a former site cleaner rising to the position of shift manager.
Overall, the early adoption of the Real Living Wage by Eland Cables reflects a company ethos centered on valuing and investing in its workforce, resulting in enhanced employee satisfaction and business performance.
