“78-Year-Old Woman’s Youthful Secret: Fresh Produce Diet”

Published on

Sheila Foster-Lane, at 78 years old, appears much younger, hinting at her healthy lifestyle choices. She resides in Kiwanis Parks Apartments, a senior housing complex in St. Catharines, where she frequents the Grow-on-the-Go mobile food market truck weekly for fresh produce like sweet potatoes and plantains. Foster-Lane emphasizes her diet of vegetables, fruits, and greens, highlighting the importance of investing in quality produce to avoid future health issues.

The mobile market attracts a significant crowd of elderly residents from the apartment complex, eagerly awaiting its arrival with a variety of affordable fruits and vegetables. Founded by Pam Farrell, the Grow Community Food Literacy Centre introduced the innovative mobile market in 2020 to address food insecurity in low-income areas like the Elgin district of downtown Niagara Falls.

The Grow initiative includes a Saturday market offering subsidized healthy food options for individuals below the low-income threshold. The program sees a large turnout at both the fixed market location and the mobile market visits to various areas in Niagara, where food insecurity is prevalent. Farrell’s inspiration for Grow stemmed from the lack of access to nutritious and affordable food in underserved communities.

Food insecurity not only affects diet but also correlates with various health issues. The Region of Niagara reports that individuals facing food insecurity are prone to conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and mental health disorders. Despite the increasing prices of food due to inflation, access to affordable healthy food remains crucial for vulnerable populations.

The Grow-on-the-Go mobile market operates in multiple regions, providing discounted fresh produce to combat food insecurity. By collaborating with the public health department, Farrell strategically selects locations with high needs to maximize the program’s impact. The initiative aims to offer a dignified shopping experience for clients, unlike the stigma associated with traditional food banks, where individuals can purchase nutritious food at subsidized rates in a welcoming environment.
