Northwestern Ontario is currently facing a challenging situation with 95 active wildfires, as reported by Ontario’s Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) on Thursday night. Among these wildfires, 11 are uncontrolled, five are being contained, 10 are under control, and the rest are under observation.
Two new fires were recently identified in the northwest region: Fort Frances 67 (FOR067) near McIntyre Lake and Nipigon 98 (NIP098) northeast of Clear Lake. The forest fire risk in northwestern Ontario is mainly low and moderate, with higher risks in the southwestern areas such as Thunder Bay and Kenora districts.
Minister of Natural Resources, Mike Harris, highlighted the challenging fires in the Quetico area and Wabakimi region due to recent lightning storms. Efforts involving over 150 Ontario fire crews and nearly 100 aircraft, including helicopters and water bombers, are ongoing to ensure safety.
Evacuation orders are in effect for several areas affected by significant fires like the Rinker Complex and Atikokan Cluster. Approximately 1,150 people are currently displaced, with evacuation alerts and orders in place for various communities.
Road closures and evacuation alerts due to wildfire activity are impacting multiple regions, with public safety being a top priority. Aid and resources, including new aircraft and personnel, are being deployed to combat the wildfires. Additionally, support services and relief efforts are in place to assist affected communities and individuals during this challenging period.
