“South Park” rebranded to “South America” in satirical twist

Published on

In an unexpected move, the long-running animated satire series “South Park” is set to undergo a rebranding for its upcoming 29th season. The show creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, have announced that the show will now be known as “South America.” This decision is a satirical jab at U.S. President Donald Trump’s penchant for renaming geographical features to include “America.”

The renaming of “South Park” to “South America” is a nod to recent efforts by tech giants Apple and Google to change names inspired by patriotism. The creators expressed gratitude to their parent company, Paramount, with a subtle dig at the company’s ownership by David Ellison, who has faced allegations of involvement in a controversial deal with Trump.

Trump’s trend of renaming landmarks to emphasize American identity began during his second term, with initiatives like renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and recently the push to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America. While some entities have resisted these changes, Apple and Google have faced criticism for updating their maps accordingly.

The announcement of “South America” coincides with Trump’s suggestion of renaming New Mexico to New America, showcasing the ongoing satirical approach of the show towards current political events. The Emmy-winning series, known for its irreverent humor and criticism of Trump, has continuously pushed boundaries with its content, drawing both praise and criticism from viewers.

The upcoming season, now titled “South America,” promises to continue the show’s tradition of sharp political satire. Fans can catch the premiere on Comedy Central on September 16, followed by its release on Paramount+ the following day.
