Canada’s senior women’s national basketball team commenced the FIBA Olympic pre-qualifying tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico, with a strong 72-57 victory over Senegal. Kayla Alexander led the team with 16 points and seven rebounds, supported by Syla Swords and Delaney Gibb, who contributed 13 points each.
Head coach Nell Fortner expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, emphasizing the importance of starting the tournament with a win. Canada’s dominant presence on the boards, especially on the offensive end, was highlighted. Tara Wallack’s four offensive rebounds significantly aided in creating extra scoring opportunities for the team.
Swords’ early three-pointers set the tone for Canada’s control of the game, leading by as much as 17 points. Despite Senegal’s push in the third quarter, Canada maintained their lead. Notably, Canada excelled in points in the paint, shooting 52.5% from that area, and had a balanced performance in points off turnovers.
