A global coalition of soccer fan organizations initiated a petition on Thursday urging Gianni Infantino to step down as FIFA president after his proposal to sell future World Cup profits to private investors. The petition, tagged InfantinOut, also demands a reconstruction of FIFA to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

The petition condemned Infantino’s move to commercialize the World Cup, labeling it as a disgraceful act that betrayed the essence of football. This initiative was swiftly abandoned by Infantino following widespread condemnation.

Notable fan groups involved in the petition include Football Supporters Europe, Football Supporters Africa, the Independent Supporters Council in North America, and approximately 40 national fan groups worldwide.

Despite facing calls for resignation from various soccer bodies, including UEFA, CONCACAF, and the Asian Football Confederation, Infantino has shown no intention of stepping down. The petition accuses him of a severe leadership failure and highlights concerns about the lack of transparency and accountability within FIFA.

The petition emphasizes the necessity for Infantino to resign for FIFA’s credibility and the future of the sport. It also criticizes his previous support for controversial projects like the European Super League and the proposal to hold World Cups biennially.
