Ladan Jahankha finds fulfillment in her local running group, which goes beyond being a mere hobby for her – it represents the realization of a long-held aspiration. Having previously resided in Iran, where women’s involvement in sports is severely restricted, Jahankha feels fortunate to now live in St. John’s, where she can freely pursue her dreams. The Center for Human Rights in Iran highlights the stringent dress codes female athletes must adhere to in Iran for public sporting events, with the government limiting women’s participation in various sports activities.

In a recent incident reported by the BBC, two marathon organizers were apprehended for allowing women without hijabs to join the event. Recounting her attempts to start running in Tehran during her twenties, Jahankha expressed how societal constraints hindered her pursuit of this passion. Now settled in St. John’s and working as a teacher, Jahankha reignited her interest in running after connecting with a colleague who shared her enthusiasm for the sport.

Through social media, Jahankha discovered a running group where she found support from a coach and fellow beginners. Grateful for the warm reception she received, Jahankha emphasized the positive impact running has had on her life, helping her cope with stress and anxiety, especially during times of heightened tensions due to the U.S.-Iran conflict. Participating in a recent Pride race with her family, Jahankha looks forward to her upcoming 5-kilometer race on August 16.

Expressing gratitude to Canada for the opportunities it offers, Jahankha acknowledged the limitations and restrictions she faced in her home country, appreciating the freedom she now enjoys. Running has become an integral part of her life, symbolizing a newfound sense of liberation and joy.
