“Daughter’s Letter to Santa Reflects Hope for Snowy Christmas”

Published on

A father, Shantanu Datta, who recently moved to Saskatoon with his family in November 2023, shared a heartwarming moment with his 11-year-old daughter. She surprised him by handing him a letter on a warm Tuesday afternoon, asking him to post it for her. In a digital age, where letter writing is uncommon, her request was special.

The letter was addressed to Santa Claus, apologizing for the delay due to their new life in Canada. The daughter expressed confidence that Santa would receive it in time, considering their proximity to the North Pole. She even humorously mentioned that the postman could deliver it swiftly because there was no snow hindering the journey.

Snow, or the lack thereof, has been a prevalent topic in their household discussions. The daughter’s wish list included a plea for snow, reminiscing about the excitement of experiencing a real snowy Christmas in Canada compared to the artificial snowflakes made in India. Her anticipation was fueled by online news from Saskatchewan, depicting snowy scenes during their departure from Delhi.

The father reflected on the quintessential Christmas imagery portrayed in Hollywood movies, envisioning sledding, cozy fireside scenes, and snowy landscapes. However, the reality in Saskatoon painted a different picture as the weather forecast hinted at a brown Christmas. Despite the festive decorations and preparations, the absence of snow cast a shadow over their daughter’s holiday expectations.

As global leaders convened at the COP28 conference to address climate change, the prospect of more brown Christmases loomed. The father pondered the urgency of tackling climate issues to preserve the traditional snowy holiday charm. Walking his daughter to school, he observed deflated festive balloons, symbolizing a subdued start to their Christmas season.

The daughter, with a blend of humor and sadness, acknowledged the likely sunny Christmas awaiting them in Saskatoon. Amidst the anticipation, a sense of longing for the magical snowy Christmas persisted. The family’s hope for a white Christmas remained resilient amidst the uncertain weather forecasts and changing climate patterns.
