The Unity Project for Relief of Homelessness celebrates its 25th anniversary with a renewed commitment to fostering a sense of belonging and community among individuals facing homelessness. Chuck Lazenby, the organization’s executive director, emphasized the importance of individuals feeling valued and connected to combat homelessness effectively.

The Unity Project originated in 2001 when a group led by Lazenby, then a 21-year-old Fanshawe College student, staged a protest at Campbell Memorial Park to raise awareness about homelessness during the Canada Summer Games in London. This initial protest evolved into a long-term program and shelter that aimed to address homelessness in a unique manner.

Currently operating a shelter in Old East Village, the Unity Project is actively pursuing the development of a larger facility to accommodate more individuals in need. Lazenby highlighted the significant rise in living costs over the past two decades, coupled with minimal increases in social assistance rates, making it increasingly challenging for those in poverty to afford basic necessities without additional support.

Furthermore, the organization has observed a surge in drug-related issues, underscoring the growing complexity of individuals’ needs. Lazenby emphasized that the fundamental solutions to homelessness and poverty remain unchanged – housing with tailored support and increased income.
