Keir Starmer has expressed satisfaction with the agreement between Israel and Hamas on the initial phase of a plan to halt the violence in Gaza, describing it as a pivotal moment that will have a global impact. This development coincided with Donald Trump’s announcement, which could lead to the release of hostages, being hailed as a significant breakthrough today.

On his Truth Social Platform, the US President declared that all hostages would soon be freed and Israel would pull back its troops to a designated line as the first steps toward a robust and lasting peace. He extended his gratitude to the mediators and countries involved in facilitating this historic event.

In response, the Prime Minister welcomed the deal reached in the first stage of President Trump’s peace initiative for Gaza, emphasizing the relief it brings to the hostages, their families, and the civilian population of Gaza after enduring immense suffering.

Acknowledging the crucial role played by the US, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey in advancing peace efforts, the Prime Minister stressed the need for swift and complete implementation of the agreement, accompanied by the immediate removal of all restrictions on vital humanitarian aid to Gaza.

The UK stands ready to support these critical initial steps and the subsequent negotiations to ensure the full realization of the peace plan. Speaking at a press conference in Mumbai, India, Mr. Starmer commended President Trump’s leadership in the negotiations, alongside Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey.

While avoiding direct comments on whether President Trump deserves a Nobel Peace Prize, Mr. Starmer emphasized the significance of the progress achieved, attributing it to President Trump’s leadership and collaborative efforts involving the UK and other mediators. The focus now is on moving forward and executing the agreement.

Social media posts from former hostages like Emily Damari and Eli Sharabi expressed joy and anticipation for the return of loved ones, reflecting the hopeful atmosphere following the agreement. Cabinet minister Pat McFadden also recognized President Trump’s contribution to the peace plan, highlighting the potential for long-term positive outcomes.

The optimism surrounding the recent developments, including the imminent release of hostages and the prospect of humanitarian aid reaching Gaza, signals a new phase in the conflict, with hopes for sustained peace and rebuilding efforts.
