Severe Weather Strands Britons in Greece; Chaos Ensues

Published on

Britons find themselves stranded overseas due to severe weather conditions disrupting travel plans, forcing some travelers to spend the night on the airport floor. Zakynthos Airport in Greece has been facing a crisis caused by flash floods and heavy rain over the past two days, leading to flight delays, cancellations, and diversions for passengers heading back to Newcastle International Airport. The airport, a popular gateway to the party destination of Zante, is crowded with frustrated holidaymakers struggling to secure accommodations.

One passenger, 21-year-old Amber Tate from Washington, shared her distressing experience upon arrival at the airport. She described the chaotic scenes where people grew agitated and impatient while awaiting flight updates. Amber recounted arriving at the airport at 6:20 pm to find large crowds outside amidst heavy rainfall. The lack of information from airport staff left passengers like her seeking basic necessities such as water and restroom facilities, unsure about the status of their flights. Eventually, at 10:17 pm, she received an email informing her that the flight was canceled, with passengers redirected to Manchester instead of Newcastle.

Another affected individual from Newcastle recounted a similar ordeal, mentioning the initial closure of the airport and subsequent hours spent braving the storm outside the terminal due to the lack of available flights and accommodations. With no rooms to book online, many passengers, including families with young children, were left with no option but to spend the night on the airport floor alongside hundreds of others.

A traveler from County Durham, choosing to remain anonymous, highlighted the challenges in finding transportation and lodging, emphasizing the difficulty of re-entering the airport once departed. Despite the hardships, plans were made to fly back to Manchester instead of Newcastle, with accommodations secured after considerable effort and expenses incurred for hotel stays and transportation.

The situation has caused distress and inconvenience for numerous travelers, emphasizing the need for improved communication and support during travel disruptions.
