“Djokovic Speaks Out on Sinner’s Doping Controversy”

Published on

Tennis icon Novak Djokovic has addressed concerns regarding Jannik Sinner’s doping issue and subsequent suspension earlier this year. The Italian player accepted a three-month ban after testing positive for anabolic steroids in 2024.

Initially, Sinner was cleared of any wrongdoing as it was determined by a tribunal that the positive tests were a result of contamination during a massage session. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) concluded that Sinner was not at fault for the incidents that occurred in March 2024.

The ITIA defended its handling of Sinner’s case last year and refuted claims of preferential treatment. In February, Sinner reached an agreement with the World Anti-Doping Agency, which had contested the initial decision not to penalize him.

Following his suspension from February to May this year, the world No. 2 strategically timed his return to coincide with the French Open in late May. Djokovic, who lost to Sinner in the semi-finals of the French Open and Wimbledon, shared his views on the situation during a recent discussion with Piers Morgan.

Djokovic expressed his shock at the circumstances surrounding Sinner’s case, citing concerns about transparency, inconsistencies, and the convenient timing of the ban to avoid major tournaments. He criticized the handling of the case and highlighted other athletes raising similar complaints about preferential treatment.

In a separate context, Djokovic faced criticism for his stance on the Covid-19 vaccine, resulting in his deportation from Australia during the 2022 Australian Open. He clarified that he advocated for freedom of choice regarding vaccination.
