A tragic incident occurred where a teenager lost his life and another person sustained permanent injuries while participating in a dangerous TikTok challenge known as “surfing.” The 17-year-old, David Nagy, was fatally injured while riding on a table attached to a car in a high school parking lot in Pennsylvania on June 1. The driver, who remains unnamed, is now facing involuntary manslaughter charges for his reckless actions.

In a separate incident, Eniya Serina Alvarado, 19, drove at 35mph in a parking lot with her 20-year-old friend standing on the car’s trunk. The friend was thrown from the vehicle, resulting in severe head injuries on March 18. Alvarado is now facing charges of aggravated assault and aggravated assault by vehicle.

Despite not having malicious intent, both teenagers are being held accountable for their gross negligence and recklessness in these incidents. Prosecutors emphasize the serious real-world consequences of such challenges, urging the public to recognize the risks involved not only for participants but also for bystanders.

Both cases are expected to be settled outside of court as first-time offenses, potentially leading to the erasure of the teens’ criminal charges. TikTok has affirmed its commitment to removing content that violates its community guidelines, including car surfing videos, and redirecting related searches to discourage the creation of such content.

TikTok reported that a significant number of offending videos are proactively removed, with the majority taken down before they are viewed. This underscores the platform’s efforts to uphold safety and prevent the circulation of harmful challenges.
