Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a warning of potential power outages in Moscow if Russia attempts to disrupt Ukraine’s power supply by targeting its infrastructure.
With the approaching winter season, Ukraine is on high alert for possible attacks on its energy facilities, recalling past incidents. Last January, Russia carried out significant missile strikes on Ukraine, impacting energy production and forcing authorities to shut down parts of the power grid despite harsh weather conditions. Amid renewed concerns of similar actions by Russia, Zelensky has declared that Ukraine would respond with corresponding measures against Moscow.
The Ukrainian leader stated, “If there is a threat of a blackout in Ukraine’s capital, then the Kremlin should be aware that there could be a blackout in Russia’s capital as well. This conversation revolves around specific points discussed with the president,” as reported by RBC Ukraine.
Highlighting the distinction between civilized and aggressive actions, Zelensky emphasized that while civilized nations do not initiate conflicts, they are not weak and should not display vulnerability.
Recent reports from Ukraine revealed that last winter, Russia disabled eight thermal plants and five hydropower facilities, leading to widespread blackouts. Following a partial ceasefire in March, Russia focused on targeting energy installations in frontline regions.
On September 8, Russia struck a thermal power facility in Kyiv Oblast, causing disruptions in the area, prompting Ukrainian authorities to brace for similar incidents. Sources within the Kremlin informed Bloomberg that Putin was planning to target energy infrastructure once again.
Facing imminent threats, Ukraine lacks adequate air defense against drone and missile attacks. Maxim Timchenko, CEO of Ukraine’s largest private energy company DTEK, expressed the challenges of defending against simultaneous attacks on critical sites by multiple drones and missiles.
The battleground in Ukraine has expanded to nearly 800 miles, stretching Kyiv’s defenses, as Russian forces deploy new tactics involving small assault groups infiltrating Ukrainian lines, according to Ukraine’s top military commander.
Over the past year, the contact line has extended by approximately 120 miles, with Ukrainian forces engaging in daily combat with Russia’s larger military, averaging between 160 and 190 skirmishes, as reported by General Oleksandr Syrskyi.
Despite unsuccessful efforts by US President Donald Trump to resolve the conflict, he expressed belief that Ukraine could regain all lost territories from Russia, amounting to about 20% of its land.
