Tentatively updating her social media profiles to reflect her status as a “widow,” Ruth Grover took a significant personal step. A decade after losing her husband Jeff to skin cancer, she finally felt prepared to acknowledge her new reality.
Reflecting on her experience, Ruth, now 69 and residing in Hartlepool, shared, “I was devastated – it took me a long time to adjust to life without Jeff, but now I feel comfortable identifying as a widow.”
The following day, Ruth was taken aback to find three unexpected messages in her inbox from unfamiliar men, all claiming to be US army generals and stating they were widowers like her.
Having spent years working at Cleveland police’s control room, Ruth immediately recognized the red flags. She delved into online research and discovered numerous cases of women falling victim to scams orchestrated by individuals posing as army personnel and widowers.
This realization in 2010 sparked Ruth’s dedication to combating romance scams. Motivated to raise awareness, she established a Facebook group named ScamHaters United, which rapidly attracted 1,000 members within a week.
Ruth delved deeper into understanding the tactics employed by scammers, who often fabricated stories of military service or working on oil rigs to manipulate their targets emotionally. Recognizing the widespread impact of romance scams globally, Ruth committed herself to assisting victims in breaking free from these fraudulent relationships.
While financial restitution remains elusive for victims, Ruth’s empathetic guidance has empowered many to sever ties with scammers and extricate themselves from deceitful entanglements. Despite the challenges posed by international scammers beyond UK jurisdiction, Ruth continues her efforts, even infiltrating scammer networks to gather intelligence and support victims.
ScamHaters United has since expanded worldwide, with volunteers in the USA and Australia collaborating to aid individuals ensnared by scammers. Ruth receives approximately 300 messages daily from individuals seeking assistance or sharing their harrowing experiences of being deceived.
Emphasizing the importance of cutting off contact with scammers, Ruth reassures victims of their solidarity within the community. Her advocacy has prevented numerous individuals from falling prey to scams, underscoring the significance of her work in safeguarding vulnerable individuals from exploitation.
