A young Gazan woman, Malak Alsweirki, has overcome the challenges of living in a war-torn region to pursue her education at a prestigious university. Recently evacuated from Gaza, where her family resides in a tent, Malak emphasizes the desire for a normal life, stating, “We’re not heroes, we’re not terrorists, we’re humans and we want to live.”

With the assistance of the Irish government, Malak was able to enroll at Trinity College Dublin, turning down offers from renowned institutions like Cambridge, Harvard, and Yale. Reflecting on her evacuation journey out of Gaza, she expressed feelings of overwhelm due to the ongoing conflict and the proximity to normalcy just a few kilometers away.

Having endured the turmoil in Gaza for the past years, Malak described the harrowing experiences she and her family faced, including food scarcity and constant fear from bombings. Despite the challenges, she is now focusing on her studies at Trinity College, aiming to excel and become a diplomat to represent her people’s aspirations for a better life.

Malak’s determination stems from her belief in the power of education and the desire to uplift her community. She envisions a future where Gazans are recognized as individuals seeking basic human rights such as education, healthcare, and peace. As she strives to make a difference, Malak remains committed to advocating for a better future for her people.
