A former highly regarded educator, known as a “superteacher,” has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for sexually assaulting and raping a child.
Lee Brumby, 64, received his sentence on Friday after being found guilty in August of five sexual offenses involving the same victim. Throughout the sentencing, Brumby remained expressionless.
The victim, in her statement read in court, expressed how the traumatic experiences continued to affect her daily life, causing constant fear and night terrors that disrupt her sleep and leave her feeling exhausted and anxious.
Judge Richard Conley, addressing Brumby, remarked on the shock that the community, including pupils and parents, would feel upon learning about the true nature of the man they trusted with their children. Conley described Brumby as a once respected figure in the community who had hidden his abhorrent actions.
Despite the convictions, Brumby maintained his innocence, with his defense lawyer stating that he had the full support of his family and his new wife’s family. The trial saw Brumby’s victim bravely testify against him, recounting the abuse that started when she was very young.
The judge described Brumby as a selfish individual who caused severe psychological harm to his victim out of his own desires. He sentenced Brumby to 16 years in prison with an additional year on extended licence, making him eligible for parole after more than a decade behind bars.
