Keir Starmer commended the courage of emergency services and security personnel in averting a larger tragedy following a terrorist assault on a synagogue in Manchester. The Prime Minister, in a statement from No10, extended sympathies to the families of the victims and all affected by the dreadful incident, assuring the Jewish community of the nation’s support in the days ahead.
“I assure you that in the upcoming days, you will witness the compassionate, decent, and loving side of Britain,” stated Mr. Starmer. He expressed condolences on behalf of the nation to the affected families and victims, acknowledging the vital role played by Greater Manchester police, first responders, and security experts in thwarting a potentially more catastrophic outcome.
During an emergency Cobra meeting in London, which the PM rushed back from a meeting with European leaders in Denmark to attend, it was disclosed that two members of the Jewish community lost their lives in the synagogue attack, with four others sustaining serious injuries on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Mr. Starmer, accompanied by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, and senior officials, highlighted the escalating trend of antisemitic hatred in the country.
Emphasizing the necessity for round-the-clock protection of Jewish institutions due to the pervasive threat of antisemitism, Mr. Starmer vowed to enhance the visible police presence to ensure the security of the Jewish community. The Prime Minister also voiced his solidarity with Jewish individuals, acknowledging the fear they endure and promising to take necessary measures to provide the safety they deserve.
“I guarantee that we will unite as a nation to embrace your community and demonstrate that Britain is a secure haven where you are valued and protected,” affirmed the Prime Minister.
