“UK Launches Task Force to Fight Covid Fraud”

Published on

A fresh task force will pursue individuals involved in Covid-related fraud against taxpayers, as announced by Rachel Reeves. The Chancellor will establish an investigative unit empowered to levy substantial fines on those who defrauded the government during the pandemic. This team will have the authority to penalize offenders up to 100% of the amount owed from all Covid initiatives, such as the Eat Out to Help Out scheme and bounce-back loans. Additionally, they will be capable of barring fraudulent claimants from serving as company directors and recommending them for potential criminal inquiry.

Reeves criticized the Conservatives for overseeing a period of widespread fraud, stating, “We are still footing the bill for their mismanagement and favoritism… and we demand reimbursement.” She assured that the recovered funds will be redirected to essential sectors like education, law enforcement, and public services. The new specialized team will be initiated on a trial basis, with £15 million allocated to ensure that those exploiting the system face consequences.

This initiative follows the directive for companies and individuals who improperly received Covid funds to return the money by December through a voluntary repayment program. In cases of non-compliance, compensation orders will be enforced to recoup the funds. The Treasury reported losses exceeding £10 billion during the pandemic due to fraud, flawed contracts, and inefficiencies.

Over £1.5 billion has been reclaimed to date, with the Chancellor appointing counter-fraud commissioner Tom Hayhoe to spearhead the cash recovery efforts. Earlier this year, it was discovered that the failure to assess the effectiveness of PPE for up to two years cost taxpayers £762 million. The Conservative government procured large quantities of protective gear, which ended up stored in shipping containers due to storage space constraints. Delays in inspecting the surplus surgical gowns, masks, and visors led to warranties expiring before the faulty PPE was identified.
