Benefit Payment Changes Expected Around Christmas & New Year

Published on

Thousands of individuals expecting benefits like Universal Credit will experience changes in their payment schedules next month due to the upcoming Christmas and New Year bank holidays.

With Christmas falling on a Thursday and Boxing Day on a Friday this year, benefit payments scheduled for those days will likely be paid out on Wednesday, December 24. Similarly, as New Year’s Day, a bank holiday, falls on a Thursday, payments due on that day are anticipated to be processed on Wednesday, December 31.

Although the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has not officially confirmed the exact timetable for Christmas and New Year benefit payments, this adjustment aligns with past years’ practices.

It is essential for recipients to manage their funds wisely if they receive payments earlier than usual, as a longer interval will occur until the subsequent payment.

The frequency of benefit payments varies depending on the type of benefit being received. For instance, Universal Credit is typically paid on a fixed date each month, while Tax Credits are usually disbursed every four weeks or weekly. Child Benefit payments are commonly issued every four weeks on a Monday or Tuesday.

In case of any discrepancies or delays in receiving expected benefit payments, individuals are advised to verify the payment dates on their award notices and bank accounts. If the payment is still missing, contacting the appropriate helpline is recommended, although note that these services may not be operational during bank holidays.
