UFC sensation Paddy Pimblett is leading a new initiative aimed at enhancing mental well-being through the sport of mixed martial arts.
Pimblett, a contender for a lightweight championship fight in the upcoming year, has been a vocal advocate for mental health awareness. After his victory over Jordan Leavitt in London in 2022, where he dedicated his win to a friend lost to suicide, Pimblett established The Baddy Foundation. This foundation focuses on addressing food insecurity issues and combating the stigma surrounding men’s mental health.
Additionally, Pimblett has taken on the role of ambassador for the UFC’s partnership with OnSide. This collaboration involves providing weekly discussions for young individuals, aiming to develop self-discipline, self-defense skills, confidence, coordination, and mental toughness under the guidance of expert instructors in a safe and encouraging setting.
Reflecting on his journey, Pimblett shared, “I grew up in Liverpool, and that has significantly influenced who I am today. Representing my city on the grand stage of the UFC means a great deal to me. Martial arts provided opportunities that I never imagined possible. I am honored to endorse this program, offering young people in Wirral a chance to discover their passions, boost their confidence, and realize that their aspirations are achievable.”
Jamie Masraff, the CEO of OnSide, commented on the positive impact of the partnership with UFC, stating that youth at several Youth Zones are benefitting from top-notch martial arts sessions. The collaboration is expanding at The Hive, focusing on well-being support groups to support young people’s mental health. These sessions aim to create a space for open communication, confidence building, resilience strengthening, and a sense of belonging among the youth.
Pimblett has bravely shared his personal struggles, emphasizing the importance of breaking the silence around men’s mental health issues. He urged those burdened with difficulties to seek help, emphasizing the significance of communication and support over the tragic consequences of remaining silent.
