“Ruth Ellis: Final Woman Executed in UK”

Published on

Ruth Ellis, known for her notorious crime, holds the distinction of being the final woman to face execution in the UK, sparking widespread public outrage. The 28-year-old nightclub hostess and mother of two fatally shot her lover, racing driver David Blakely, outside a pub in Hampstead, north-west London, driven by jealousy.

Their tumultuous relationship, entangled in the murky world of 1950s London, saw them both involved with other individuals. On Easter Sunday in 1955, Ruth ambushed Blakely outside the Magdala pub. Armed with a .38 Smith & Wesson revolver, she fired multiple shots, ultimately leading to Blakely’s death.

During her trial at the Old Bailey, Ruth openly admitted her intention to kill Blakely. The swift jury decision of guilt and the subsequent death sentence shocked the nation, prompting over 50,000 signatures on a petition urging clemency. Despite the perceived justification due to Blakely’s mistreatment and Ruth’s emotional turmoil, the plea for a reprieve went unanswered, causing widespread dismay.

On the fateful day of July 13, 1955, Ruth Ellis faced her execution at Holloway prison, with crowds gathering outside in solemn anticipation. Despite receiving communion and a glass of brandy, she met her fate with remarkable composure, leaving a lasting impact on the public’s perception of the death penalty.

Her death became a focal point in the campaign against capital punishment, culminating in its abolition in the UK. Ruth’s tragic end took a toll on her family, with her ex-husband and mother experiencing severe distress. Her children also faced challenges, with her son Andy struggling with mental health issues and ultimately taking his own life. Similarly, her daughter Georgina battled personal demons and succumbed to cancer at a relatively young age.

Ruth’s legacy endures as the final woman to be executed in the UK, a somber reminder of a dark chapter in the country’s history.
