“U.S. Trade Rep Warns of Action on Tariff Retaliation”

Published on

U.S. trade representative Jamieson Greer stated that the Trump administration is prepared to take action against any country that retaliates if President Trump proceeds with the latest tariff threat. Greer emphasized that the measures are aimed at safeguarding domestic supply chains and are not limited to Canada. Trade discussions between Canada and the U.S. have intensified following Trump’s warning of imposing a 50% tariff on numerous Canadian products from August 19, in addition to existing sector-specific tariffs.

Greer described his meetings with Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc as positive and characterized the dialogues as constructive. He highlighted that while Canada appears inclined towards a conciliatory approach, the U.S. is focused on executing President Trump’s trade policies to benefit America. Greer mentioned that both countries are negotiating various trade issues, with a particular focus on the impending tariffs and existing levies on sectors like automotive and steel.

Regarding the upcoming tariff deadline, Greer mentioned that Trump and Prime Minister Mark Carney will be presented with options. Sources familiar with the negotiations revealed that Canada is willing to address concerns related to provincial alcohol bans, dairy quotas, and auto tariffs. However, there are differences between the two sides on the extent of tariff reductions. Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet expressed skepticism about reaching a deal before the deadline, cautioning against compromising on dairy negotiations.

Greer criticized Canada’s retaliatory measures, likening them to actions taken by China. In response, former Canadian Ambassador to the U.S. Frank McKenna defended Canada’s stance, asserting that retaliatory actions were necessary to counter unfair and illegal U.S. measures. McKenna emphasized the importance of standing up for Canadian interests in the face of U.S. pressure.
