A tragic incident occurred on a Moto service station when a man passed away due to a medical emergency, leading to the closure of the location and causing traffic disruptions earlier today. Emergency responders quickly arrived at Birch services on the M62 eastbound near Heywood, Greater Manchester, at 10:05 am. Greater Manchester Police confirmed that a 50-year-old man suffered a suspected heart attack in his vehicle and was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
According to reports from The Manchester Evening News, the man’s family has been informed of his passing and is receiving support from specialized officers. The Moto service station access was temporarily blocked from the M62 eastbound while emergency services dealt with the situation. However, the slip road reopened around midday following the incident. Moto is expected to release a statement regarding the matter.
The morning’s brief delay on the M62 came after a night of chaos on the motorway due to severe weather conditions causing localized flooding. The adverse weather, which followed Met Office warnings of strong winds and heavy rain, resulted in a lane closure near Huddersfield and traffic congestion along the westbound stretch of the motorway.
Traffic England classified the situation as “severe” on its monitoring platform, with forecasters advising caution on slippery roads and warning of disruptions on other motorways like the M56, M6, and M61. The Met Office issued a yellow warning for the Midlands and northern England, including the affected M62 area, urging people to check road conditions before traveling.
The agency emphasized the importance of staying informed about road conditions, bus schedules, and train timetables to minimize delays and adjust travel plans if needed. Although weather warnings for heavy rain and strong winds expired early this morning, road conditions remained challenging in some regions as the earlier disruptions cleared.
