“Tom McKibbin Breaks Course Record at Hong Kong Open”

Published on

LIV Golf sensation Tom McKibbin expressed how the opportunity to secure a spot at the prestigious Masters and the Open fueled his exceptional performance of breaking the course record with a remarkable opening round score of 60 at the Hong Kong Open. Despite advice from his compatriot and mentor Rory McIlroy to join the Saudi-backed tour earlier in the year, the 22-year-old opted to follow his own path.

Having previously excelled in the Race to Dubai and clinched a PGA Tour card, McKibbin concluded his initial LIV season in 17th place, amassing a significant $5,768,351. Presently ranked 109th globally, he faces the challenge of not being automatically eligible for next year’s Major tournaments.

The Hong Kong Open not only offers a substantial $2 million prize fund but also presents an invaluable opportunity for the top-performing player to secure coveted spots at Augusta and Royal Birkdale for the following year. McKibbin, who had never participated in the Masters before, achieved his personal best professional score of 60 during the tournament’s opening round.

Expressing his motivation, McKibbin highlighted the enticing prospects at stake, emphasizing how the tournament structure fueled his determination to excel. Embracing a bold approach, he aimed for every flag, resulting in a successful performance.

Transitioning to the professional circuit in 2021, McKibbin made history by becoming the youngest Irish winner on the DP World Tour since McIlroy. Notably, he secured a lucrative deal with Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII team, signifying a significant milestone in his career.

While McIlroy cautioned McKibbin on potentially jeopardizing his chances at Major events and the Ryder Cup, McKibbin justified his decision by emphasizing the appeal of consistent competition on the tour. Despite acknowledging the risk, he remained focused on the opportunities presented by the new venture.

In a remarkable display, McKibbin’s record-breaking feat at the Hong Kong Open outshone previous achievements, surpassing a score set by Aaron Rai in 2018. With several LIV players competing in the event, the tournament promises an exciting lineup and fierce competition among seasoned professionals.

Looking ahead, upcoming golfing events such as the Australian Open and the South African Open also hold the promise of granting Masters invitations to LIV players, further intensifying the competitive landscape. Additionally, the Hong Kong Open contributes to the International Series Rankings on the Asian Tour, offering a pathway for top performers to secure coveted invitations to LIV Golf events.
