A woman faced a violent sexual assault and was left deeply affected by a date she met through the Tinder app.
Sophie, a former student at Queen’s University Belfast, had initially engaged in consensual intimacy with Fearghall Mulgrew, who then proceeded to bite her on the face and body and engage in non-consensual sexual acts. This incident in 2021 resulted in Sophie sustaining injuries and multiple bruises. Following the assault, Sophie sought assistance by self-referring to The Rowan, a sexual assault referral center in Northern Ireland, and reporting the incident to the Northern Irish authorities. In a court hearing on February 5 last year at Laganside Court, Mulgrew, a resident of Stewartstown, was convicted of sexual assault by penetration and five counts of assault causing actual bodily harm. He received a 22-month sentence, with eight months to be served in custody, and was mandated to register as a sex offender for a decade.
In an interview with BelfastLive, Sophie expressed her desire to empower other survivors of sexual assault to pursue justice. Recalling the traumatic encounter, she revealed that Mulgrew’s behavior turned aggressive despite their initial discussions about boundaries. She recounted instances of being subjected to biting, choking, and physical harm, all while expressing her objections, which Mulgrew callously ignored. Sophie shared that she eventually left the room after the ordeal, feeling shocked and struggling to come to terms with the incident.
Despite the emotional turmoil that followed, Sophie found the strength to report the assault and engage with support services, emphasizing the importance of seeking help and speaking out against such violations. She commended the responsiveness and sensitivity of the authorities involved in her case, noting the challenges she faced while being away in London during the legal proceedings. Sophie acknowledged her ongoing journey towards healing and highlighted the significance of breaking the silence around non-consensual experiences to encourage others to seek assistance early on.
By sharing her story and advocating for survivors’ rights, Sophie aimed to challenge misconceptions about consent and underscore the complexities of such traumatic events. She emphasized the need for support, understanding, and a nuanced approach to addressing instances of sexual violence, stressing that everyone deserves to be heard and believed in their pursuit of justice.
