Starting university can be an exhilarating experience as students embrace newfound independence. However, a survey of 1,000 university graduates revealed that a significant 80% wished they had been better informed about the realities of student life and more adequately prepared. Insights from the alumni highlighted essential items that significantly eased their university journey, such as a doorstop to foster a welcoming atmosphere and earplugs for uninterrupted rest, especially during the bustling Freshers’ Week.
Research conducted by EXTRA emphasized the importance of key items for new students, including a laundry basket to manage clothing clutter and cozy slippers for warmth without cranking up the heating. Additional recommendations encompassed flip flops for communal bathrooms and a stock of cold and flu remedies to combat the common “fresher’s flu.” Moreover, beyond packing essentials, many emphasized the significance of mental readiness for the university experience.
For many university students, a major unexpected challenge is keeping up with social engagements in their first year, with one-third struggling to manage their finances being another prevalent issue. Uncertainty about joining fresher’s societies and anxiety about forging new friendships were also common concerns among students.
To address these challenges, a collaboration between a chewing gum brand and student wellbeing advocate, Ben West, offered expert guidance to alleviate initial nervousness during the early weeks of university. West emphasized simple strategies like deep breathing to induce relaxation, chewing gum for a familiar routine, and taking walks to release feel-good chemicals in the brain. Engaging with upbeat media like podcasts or music was recommended to divert mental focus, while actively participating in social events and keeping doors open to meet new people were encouraged to facilitate integration into the university community.
