Tammara Thibeault: Canada’s History-Making Boxing Champion

Published on

Tammara Thibeault’s boxing journey has been about mastering the art of being present in the moment. When her career-defining fight arrived on August 8, she approached it one round at a time. It wasn’t until a few days later, holding the championship belts, that the realization of her achievement truly hit her.

Thibeault, a 29-year-old from Shawinigan, Quebec, secured a victory over Australia’s Desley Robinson in Orlando, Florida, by unanimous decision, with all three judges scoring the fight 100-90. This win marked Thibeault as the first Canadian woman to claim the title of a unified professional world champion by adding Robinson’s IBF and WBO middleweight titles to her collection along with the Ring Magazine belt.

Remarkably, Thibeault accomplished this feat in just five professional fights, making her the quickest fighter in history to win a Ring Magazine world championship. Her ability to maintain focus and stay in the moment was crucial during the fight, especially when she faced significant bleeding from a headbutt but managed to remain in control and secure the win.

Despite her professional success, Thibeault also returned to Olympic-style boxing last year, winning a Canadian amateur title in November and earning a silver medal at the Boxing World Cup in Guiyang, China, in June. Training in Belfast with national-team boxers from India and New Zealand provided her with valuable experience against various styles, enhancing her adaptability and problem-solving skills.

Thibeault values the freedom of expression that professional boxing allows, particularly through her outfits, which showcase her personality and represent what she stands for. For her fight against Robinson, she sported a leg sleeve inspired by the legendary sprinter, Florence Griffith Joyner, known as FloJo, whom she admired for breaking barriers while staying true to herself.

Despite her recent world championship win, Thibeault remains focused on her goal of competing in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, where she aims to secure a spot on the podium. Her past Olympic experience in Paris, where she fell short of a medal, motivates her to strive for success in both her professional and Olympic careers, viewing them as distinct but equally challenging endeavors.

The overwhelming support and positive reactions to Thibeault’s victory have been humbling for her, emphasizing the impact of her achievement on the Canadian community and the boxing world. She encourages young athletes to persevere through challenges, learn from mistakes, and trust in their abilities.

Looking ahead, Thibeault’s next major competition is the Pan American championships in October in Pueblo, Mexico. However, she plans to prioritize rest and recovery in the coming weeks to ensure she is refreshed and prepared for the upcoming challenge. While her titles may have elevated her status in the boxing world, Thibeault remains committed to her methodical approach of taking on one challenge at a time, one round at a time, with a determination to achieve more in her boxing career.
