“SiriusXM Comedy Channel Shake-Up Leaves Comics Struggling”

Published on

Comedian Liz Miele has experienced a significant loss in income, mirroring the plight of many others in her field. SiriusXM has discontinued its Raw Comedy/Raw Dog channel, a platform that showcased over 800 comedians, in favor of a new channel led by renowned comedian Sebastian Maniscalco. This switch has left Miele and numerous working-class comedians without a vital source of income and visibility, while affluent celebrity comics dominate the spotlight.

Miele shared her financial struggles, emphasizing the crucial role SiriusXM played in her financial stability during challenging times. The platform had been a lifeline for many comedians, enabling them to support themselves and their families. The replacement channel, despite promises of inclusivity, has favored established names over emerging talents, as highlighted by industry advocacy group Stand Up for Standup.

Prior to the channel change, Raw Comedy showcased over 800 comedians monthly, each earning $15 in royalties per performance. In contrast, the revamped channel featured only 275 comedians recently, with the top 50 artists receiving the majority of airtime, including well-known figures like Chris Rock and Kevin Hart. This disparity in exposure and earnings has sparked concerns about wealth concentration within the comedy industry.

The impact extends beyond individual comedians, as Toronto-based comedian Danish Anwar revealed a significant drop in his royalties, affecting his colleagues’ livelihoods. Many Canadian comics rely on SiriusXM royalties to sustain their careers, with some facing potential challenges in maintaining work visas due to the loss of this income stream.

While high-profile comedians like Patton Oswalt and Michelle Wolf have urged Maniscalco to support emerging talents, the decision to discontinue Raw Comedy was made by SiriusXM before his involvement. Despite the backlash, Maniscalco has pledged to collaborate with SiriusXM to provide a platform for diverse voices in comedy, emphasizing his understanding of the industry’s challenges.

The situation has prompted calls for solidarity and advocacy within the comedy community, with Toronto-born comedian Steph Tolev highlighting the power of collective action in influencing decisions that impact comedians. Anwar emphasizes the need for unity and improved industry practices to navigate the financial repercussions of the channel change, underscoring the significant impact on comedians’ livelihoods.
