The first-ever Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham faced a setback at the beginning. The opening day of practice and qualifying for the exclusive IndyCar event in Canada was called off on Friday due to incomplete track construction, preventing officials from conducting final safety checks. Organizers announced plans to accommodate all missed track sessions from the first day into Saturday’s schedule.
This year marks Markham’s debut as the host city for the event, following its relocation from Toronto’s Exhibition Place, where it had been held since its inception in 1986. J. Douglas Boles, the president of IndyCar, expressed disappointment over the delay in track completion despite substantial assistance from the on-site team. He acknowledged the significant turnout of spectators on the initial day and apologized for the logistical challenges faced by the new event.
Long-time race attendees Mark Coburn of Kitchener, Ont., and Scott Stobo of Waterloo, Ont., who have been coming to the event for two decades, drove to Markham early on Friday morning. Coburn shared mixed feelings about the postponement of practice and qualifying, emphasizing the importance of ensuring a safe track environment for all participants and fans. Stobo remarked on the unique location of the event in an industrial park in the suburbs, expressing his initial hope for a different venue like the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
The decision to move the event to Markham was announced by IndyCar and the City of Markham in September last year. The newly constructed temporary circuit, located between Kennedy Road, Enterprise Boulevard, the Unionville GO tracks, and Highway 407, faced incomplete features, such as a pedestrian bridge and safety fencing modifications for marshals.
Government support for the event was evident, with the Ontario government investing $1.5 million and the federal government contributing $3.5 million. Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti confirmed substantial capital spending exceeding $12 million for the race’s infrastructure upgrades. Despite the challenges, Friday’s events saw a large turnout of fans enjoying the warm weather, with activities off the track proceeding as planned.
Saturday’s schedule promises a full day of activities, with IndyCar hosting practice sessions and qualifying rounds. Additional races by the USF2000 Championship, USF Pro 2000, Radical Cup Canada, and NASCAR Canada Series are also scheduled for the weekend. Boles expressed confidence in the circuit’s potential once operations commence and thanked the city of Markham for its support in providing a promising track layout for the upcoming race weekend.
