Scottish Labour leader, Anas Sarwar, has criticized Nigel Farage, branding him a ‘chameleon’ and accusing Reform UK of advocating racist policies. Sarwar emphasized that Scotland would reject Farage and his party, citing a lack of empathy towards the country’s issues. He expressed concerns about the racist undertones of Reform UK’s campaign strategies, particularly highlighting their approach during the Hamilton by-election.

Sarwar clarified that while he does not label all potential voters for Reform UK as racist, he believes many are driven by frustration and a sense of hopelessness, leading them to support the party. He stressed the importance of offering viable solutions to address the needs of the people in Scotland and unite the country towards a positive direction, contrasting this with what he perceives as the divisive tactics of the SNP.

Moreover, Sarwar condemned attack ads by Reform UK that targeted him, alleging a preference for individuals from Pakistan over Scottish citizens. He also criticized Farage’s proposal to eliminate a key route to citizenship for legal immigrants, denouncing it as racist. Additionally, Sarwar highlighted Reform UK’s controversial stance on mass deportations of asylum seekers, including women and children, as a concerning and draconian policy.

In response to the challenges faced by the Labour party, Sarwar urged his colleagues to enhance their communication efforts with the public. He emphasized the need to proactively showcase the positive contributions of Labour on a daily basis, rather than confining the party’s achievements to the duration of a conference. Sarwar called for a more assertive approach in highlighting Labour’s accomplishments and future plans, aiming to counter negative perceptions and build a stronger connection with the electorate.
