“Refugees Rock: Climbing Toward Unity in Liverpool”

Published on

Last week, while supporters of the Labour Party were convening in Liverpool for their annual conference, our team traveled to Birkenhead through the Mersey tunnel. We presented a film from our ‘Island of Strangers’ series at the inspiring co-operatively owned venue, Future Yard, where the local community participated in its creation.

This experience was deeply moving for us. For several months, my colleagues Claire Donnelly, John Domokos, and I collaborated with the individuals involved in a remarkable initiative known as Refugees Rock. The project originated when a climbing wall in Liverpool began offering free sessions to asylum seekers and refugees in the area.

Amidst ongoing challenges faced by asylum seekers and refugees, particularly from far-right groups, the Climbing Hangar’s inclusive approach, where refugees are paired with ‘Boulder Buddies,’ stands out for its compassion. Ali, a 21-year-old refugee from Iran, shared his struggle of feeling like a “desert island” upon arriving in a new country. Witnessing his transformation from introversion to camaraderie with his climbing partner Sev Domela was truly impactful.

Despite efforts by many to unite communities, there are divisive forces at play. The recent attack on a synagogue in Heaton Park, Manchester, on the sacred day of Yom Kippur, signifies a broader assault on unity. While the motives behind the attack remain unclear, it threatens the harmony of a diverse, multi-faith neighborhood that fosters tolerance amidst differences.

Local MP Graham Stringer condemned the attack as an assault on the city’s tolerant ethos and inter-community relations. This incident echoes past instances of division in nearby areas like Southport and Knowsley, further emphasizing the need for solidarity and understanding.

However, amidst these challenges, instances of unity and support shine through. The response to threats faced by Asylum Link Merseyside exemplified the power of community solidarity in the face of adversity. Thousands rallied to protect the organization, denouncing hate and embracing love as the guiding force in the city.

Similarly, Manchester has shown resilience in the aftermath of tragedies, with diverse communities coming together to defy division. The spirit of unity and cooperation remains vital in combating attempts to sow discord.

Through our ‘Island of Strangers’ series, we aim to showcase the positive stories of community cohesion and resilience. By highlighting the efforts of ordinary individuals working towards unity, we envision a path forward in overcoming societal challenges.

The film captures the journey of Ali, a young man finding solace and belonging through climbing, symbolizing the triumph over isolation and hardship. His friendship with Sev, a seasoned climber, underscores the transformative power of shared experiences and mutual support.

As we navigate turbulent times, it is through such acts of kindness and solidarity that communities can navigate the complexities of division and strife. The climbing metaphor underscores the importance of collaboration and perseverance in overcoming obstacles, both on the rock face and in life.

Our ‘Island of Strangers’ films are released weekly on our Mirror Originals YouTube channel, showcasing inspiring narratives of resilience and unity within our communities.
