“PM Carney Condemns U.S. Criticisms, Urges Respectful Trade Talks”

Published on

Prime Minister Mark Carney responded to recent criticisms from U.S. cabinet members regarding Canada and its military, calling their comments “inappropriate” and urging them to approach trade talks more seriously. Carney’s remarks came following remarks by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent likening Canada’s navy to a closed ride at a mall and Transport Secretary Sean Duffy questioning Canada’s military capabilities.

Carney emphasized the need for a more respectful and productive dialogue, stating that the U.S. officials should focus on substantive discussions rather than engaging in provocative rhetoric. He highlighted the importance of constructive engagement in trade negotiations between the two countries.

Trade talks between Canada and the U.S. broke down recently, leading to a series of disparaging remarks and actions from the U.S. side, including social media insults and mocking gestures. Canadian officials, including Defence Minister David McGuinty and Ontario Premier Doug Ford, have pushed back against the disparaging comments from the U.S. administration.

Carney detailed the reasons for Canada pulling out of the negotiations, citing unfair demands from the U.S. that would have restricted Canada’s trade flexibility and impacted key industries. He underscored Canada’s commitment to protecting its core industries and sovereignty in any trade deal with the U.S.

Despite the breakdown in talks and subsequent tariffs imposed by the U.S., Carney expressed optimism for a potential agreement that respects Canada’s interests and cultural values. He emphasized the need for a mutually beneficial trade deal that upholds Canadian sovereignty and supports key industries.

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne met with U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent to discuss trade issues, emphasizing the importance of a serious and constructive approach to negotiations. Champagne highlighted Canada’s key sectors and industries that need protection in any trade agreement.

A recent poll conducted by Reuters/Ipsos indicated that a majority of Americans oppose Trump’s tariffs on Canadian goods and the renaming of Lake Ontario to “Lake America.” The survey results underscored the division among Americans regarding these trade-related actions.
