A plumbing expert has shared five clever tips to help you save money this winter, including a £5 item from Lidl that is a must-have for your home.

With the drop in temperatures, many people are relying more on their heating systems, leading to higher energy costs. However, there are effective ways to cut down on your household bills. An expert from Advanced Heating & Plumbing has outlined practical strategies to maintain a cozy home environment during the winter months.

Draughts are a significant factor in the loss of indoor heat, allowing cold air in and warm air out. Identifying and sealing draught points is crucial to reduce the need for prolonged heating. Placing a draught excluder at the bottom of doors can prevent cold air infiltration. Lidl offers a draught excluder for just £4.99, which can potentially save you up to £85 on energy expenses this winter.

Windows can also be a source of draughts. To check for gaps around windows, hold a candle near the frame – if the flame flickers, there is a draft. Sealing these gaps with draught-proofing strips or caulk can help retain heat indoors.

Closing unused chimneys can prevent cold air from entering your home. If your fireplace is purely decorative, taking action to block the chimney can prevent heat loss.

Enhancing floor insulation can be achieved by strategically placing rugs in areas with floorboards or tiles. Opt for shaggy or heavyweight rugs that effectively trap heat, and consider using underlay for better insulation and stability.

Elevating radiators can improve heat circulation without increasing energy consumption. Simple steps like moving furniture away from radiators and using reflectors to redirect heat back into the room can enhance heating efficiency. Affordable reflection panels or even a makeshift solution like a kitchen foil can be used for this purpose. Additionally, a radiator fan placed on top of the radiator can help circulate warm air more effectively.

Maximize natural light during the day by keeping curtains open to let sunlight warm your rooms. Close curtains and blinds at night to retain warmth and prevent heat loss. Thermal-lined curtains can provide additional insulation for your windows.

To add warmth to your kitchen, consider leaving the oven door open after baking to utilize residual heat. Brewing hot beverages can also increase humidity in the air, making it feel warmer. Lastly, layering up with blankets and throws can offer a cost-effective way to stay cozy during the winter season.
