A man from Ontario faced animal cruelty charges in a Las Vegas court for taking a flamingo named Peachy from its habitat at a famous hotel. Mitchell Fairbarn was accused of injuring the flamingo in a drunken and malicious act. Following a trial, Fairbarn was convicted of felony and misdemeanor animal cruelty charges and faces potential prison time.
Fairbarn admitted to taking the flamingo after consuming a large amount of alcohol during a construction expo trip to Las Vegas. He claimed he thought it would be a humorous prank. The incident caused injuries to Peachy, resulting in missing feathers, broken shafts, and blood loss consistent with trauma. The flamingo required medical treatment, including antibiotics and pain medication.
Video evidence showed Fairbarn handling the flamingo roughly, causing physical distress to the bird. Despite Fairbarn’s lawyer stating that no harm was intended, prosecutors argued that the actions caused the flamingo pain. Fairbarn expressed regret for his actions and admitted to being intoxicated at the time of the incident.
Witnesses testified that Fairbarn and his friends were drinking heavily before the incident occurred. The hotel’s wildlife habitat, certified by the National Wildlife Federation, is home to various bird species, including Chilean flamingos like Peachy. The hotel staff managed to retrieve Peachy safely, and the flamingo has since recovered.
Animal rights advocates praised the court’s decision, emphasizing the importance of protecting animals from harm. This incident is one of several recent cases of animal cruelty at Las Vegas casinos, highlighting the need for stricter enforcement of animal welfare laws in the region.
